The Markham Thunder will be battling les Canadiennes de Montréal in a best of three playoff series for a berth in the Clarkson Cup Final.
The regular season series saw all five contests go to extra time – three were decided in overtime, and two in the shootout – with Montréal taking the extra points. The hard fought battles this season, coupled with a gruelling playoff series to end the 2016-17 season gives these teams a pretty heated rivalry.
All five games of this season’s series took place in the first half of the season. This means that fans are in for an interesting playoffs as both teams have made big moves. The Thunder have had players return from injury, added Megan Bozek as a free agent signing, and have welcomed back all three Olympians – captain Jocelyne Larocque, Laura Fortino, and Laura Stacey. Les Canadiennes made last minute additions in free agent Hilary Knight and welcomed back Olympian Lauriane Rougeau.
Even with slightly new looks since their last meetings, look for the line of Jamie Lee Rattray – Kristen Richards – Laura McIntosh to continue their offensive prowess. The line had 18 points in the five contests, having a hand in every goal (8G, 10A).
Erica Howe and Liz Knox had phenomenal performances in goal. The duo turned aside 38 more shots than Montréal’s Emerance Maschmeyer, and were critical in forcing les Canadiennes to extra time.
Markham enters the playoffs on a seven game win streak and with a bolstered, healthy roster. The Thunder is rolling. Can you feel it?
