Jayna Hefford, the Thunder’s franchise leader in games played, points, and goals, will be officially inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame this evening (November 12, 2018) during the gala ceremony in Toronto. Liz Knox, the longest-tenured active member of the Thunder and CWHLPA co-chair, penned this open letter to her former captain.
These letters typically start off by saying congratulations, right? Something along the lines of, “Congratulations on all you have accomplished, on all your accolades and medals, on your honours as an Olympian and on your most recent induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame.” Well certainly, congratulations Jayna! You’ve done it all. But, it’s just not your style to brag so instead I’d like to say thank you.
Thank you for being the role model that young people should look up to. You are a poised, humble and kind person— no matter who is watching.
Thank you for your quiet confidence as a leader and your ability lead by example on the ice. Your speed and accuracy as a player were vital to so much of your teams’ success over the years. (I’m sure at this time Mac would also like to thank you for single-handedly awarding her all those far blue saucy apples in Brampton.)
Thank you for setting the standard for female athletes to aspire to. Someone who balances her athletic career, professional endeavours, and personal life with grace. A driven business woman who somehow always finds time to be a supportive daughter, loving partner and mother, and reliable teammate and friend.
Finally, thank you for breaking barriers and continuing to strive for equality in sport. The players of the CWHL are extremely proud to have you as our interim Commissioner and know that you represent, not only our dreams, but also the rich history that has afforded us the right to play.
The Hockey Hall of Fame recognizes the greatest players to ever touch the game. I truly cannot think of anyone more deserving of such an honour.
Congratulations Jayna! Thank you.
