Calgary Inferno uses early goal to top Brampton Thunder, 4-2

Calgary Inferno took the lead against Brampton Thunder in the first period and maintained it until the end of the game to secure a tight 4-2 victory.

Calgary Inferno took over the lead for good with a goal by Hayley Wickenheiser at 14:51 in the first period. Calgary Inferno had gotten the advantage when Brampton Thunder’s Leah Whittaker was sent off for interference. Hayleigh Cudmore picked up the assist.

After the loss made the series score 1-0 in the best of three series, Brampton Thunder faces elimination next time out.

Calgary Inferno pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 14 penalty minutes.

Calgary Inferno was sparked by Blayre Turnbull, who registered one goal and one assist. Turnbull scored 9:57 into the third period to make the score 3-1 Calgary Inferno. Meaghan Mikkelson-Reid provided the assist.

Calgary Inferno excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in seven chances. Calgary Inferno kept Brampton Thunder’s goalie busy throughout the game, and Erica Howe made 29 saves on 33 shots.

Calgary Inferno also got points from Rebecca Johnston, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Calgary Inferno also got a goal from Jill Saulnier as well. Other players who recorded assists for Calgary Inferno were Brigitte Lacquette and Brianne Jenner, who contributed one each.

Brampton Thunder was helped by Jenna McParland, who had one goal. McParland scored 15:02 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Calgary Inferno. Becca King picked up the assist. Rebecca Vint also scored for Brampton Thunder. In addition, Brampton Thunder received assists from Sarah Edney, who had one.
