Brampton defenceman Courtney Birchard took home Rookie of the Year honours at the CWHL’s sponsorship recognition and awards ceremony banquet, Wednesday night, at Remington’s in Niagara Falls.
Seventh in Brampton scoring, Birchard had three goals and 13 assists and was +13 in 25 games during the regular season.
"I was really surprised," Says Birchard. "I thought (Meghan) Agosta was going to win because she had already won the award for Top Scorer and Most Valuable Player."
The 22-year-old adds this award to a growing roster of hockey accomplishments.
She was a gold medalist at the 2010 4 Nations Cup, a gold medalist at the 2008 and 2011 MLP Cup, was ranked fifth in NCAA scoring for a defenceman as a Junior at the University of New Hampshire, and won provincial titles with the Toronto Jr. Aeros in 2004 and 2005 prior to joining the Brampton Hockey Club.
"I am obviously thrilled to win Rookie of the Year in the best league there is for female hockey players," adds Birchard. "It was really exciting to hear my team cheer that loudly for me."
Brampton opens the post season against the Boston Blades, Thursday, at the Gale Centre in Niagara Falls.
